NFU says worker safety is paramount to reopening

The president of the National Farmers Union says it’s good that the Trump administration is taking action to help farmers and consumers hurt by meat plant closings. But, Rob Larew tells Brownfield Trump’s executive order to reopen plants must not be at the expense of workers, “From our perspective what’s in the ultimate best interest of farmers is also making sure that the workers in these plants who are members of these communities also remain safe and are afforded the proper protection.”

Larew says the system is not set up for workers’ best interests or to ensure farmers are getting the best shake they can, “I think Tyson and a lot of folks are going to be just fine, right? In fact, they’re buying product from farmers, in some cases, for 30% less and selling it for record high prices.”

Larew says the plants must ensure they are using the OSHA and CDC best practices to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
