Missouri Farmers Union on farm bill priorities at fly-in

Members of the National Farmers Union are in D.C. for their annual fly-in and this year it’s about Congress getting a new farm bill to the finish line.

Missouri Farmers Union President Tom Coudron tells Brownfield they want the safety net preserved and improved, “We would like to see an increase in the reference prices which would help on the subsidy side of that issue. We would like to see an increase in the cap on the loan authority, as well, on the lending program.”

Coudron says Farmers Union members also want conservation programs preserved, “But we’d also like to see an increase of acreage within the CRP.”

He says they want the Conservation Reserve Program kept separate from the Conservation Stewardship Program. Coudron says the CRP, the CSP and the EQIP programs serve different roles and farmers tend to use them in different ways.
