NFU: Brazil’s meat scandal another reason for COOL

The president of the National Farmers Union (NFU) says Brazil’s meat scandal is another reason to have country-of-origin labeling (COOL) on meat products.

Roger Johnson says if COOL was in place, consumers would instantly know whether they were buying Brazilian beef.

“They would know that immediately, and going down the aisles of the grocery store would say, ‘Hey, you know what, I’m going to make a choice. I’m not going to buy this potentially dangerous stuff from Brazil. I’m going to buy product from the U.S.’,” Johnson says.

The Trump Administration is preparing to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Johnson says NFU wants COOL to be a priority in those discussions.

“If he’s going to sit down with Canada and Mexico and renegotiate NAFTA, let’s put COOL back on the agenda,” he says. “That’s something that people in this country want overwhelmingly. It’s something that our members have long fought for and believe in.”

The previous COOL law was repealed by Congress in December of 2015 after a World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute with Canada and Mexico.
