New soy protein concentrate for weanling pigs

Hans Stein

Researchers at the University of Illinois have developed a new soy protein concentrate for weanling pigs.

Animal science professor Hans Stein says numerous experiments confirm the technology produces higher levels of protein compared to de-hulled soybean meal, without negatively effecting digestibility of energy or nutrients.

Soy protein concentrate is typically produced by using an alcohol extraction process to remove soluble carbohydrates from soybean meal that weanling pigs can’t digest.

However, Stein says the new concentrate combines a non-alcohol extraction process with enzymatic treatment of the meal.

Midwest Ag Enterprises of Marshall, Minnesota provided funding for the research.
