New round of organic funding announced

USDA is investing more than $30 million in organic grant projects which support research, extension, and transitions.

More than 20 projects were awarded through the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative. 

Examples of funding projects include:

Challenges and opportunities for U.S. organic rice by the University of Arkansas, carrot improvements for organic agriculture by Illinois’s Agricultural Research Service, genetic organic corn research at Iowa State University, multi-state efforts for improving quality and safety of organic produce by Kansas State University, integrating rye as a winter annual into organic pig production by the University of Minnesota, and merging tribal life and organic practices as well as creating a regional and local maize food system by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Nearly a dozen projects were awarded for helping farmers transition to organic.  Among recipients were Missouri’s Lincoln University, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
