New meat/poultry provisions in HEROES Act 2.0

Three of the new agriculture provisions in the updated coronavirus relief bill introduced by the House this week relate to meat and poultry.

The HEROES Act 2.0 provides more than one Billion dollars to assist contract growers of poultry and livestock growers who face losses because of reduced placements related to COVID-19.

It provides grants to improve meat and poultry facilities to allow for interstate shipment. And it requires a report on the structure and availability of U.S. meat and poultry processing including ways to increase processing capacity.

The fourth provision added to the updated HEROES Act assists rural utilities service providers through competitive grants.

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said at an event sponsored by CNBC that he’s “hopeful” about the prospects of a deal. He is meeting again to day with House Speaker Pelosi.

The $2.2 Trillion dollar package is reduced from the HEROES Act that passed in May by about a trillion dollars.
