Negotiations continue between the U.S. and Canada

Top U.S. and Canadian negotiators are meeting again today as they try to resolve NAFTA trade differences.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland described yesterday’s meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer as “constructive”, but offered no other details.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday Canadian negotiators would continue to defend the country’s agricultural policies. Canada’s dairy supply management system has been a major sticking point in the negotiations.

Canada could be left out if a trade deal isn’t worked out soon, as the U.S. has already made a deal with Mexico. However, there’s some question as to whether Congress would approve a deal that leaves Canada out.
