NEFB President says recent meeting on cattle markets is good news for producers

The president of the Nebraska Farm Bureau says he’s not surprised several national ag and livestock organizations met to discuss the cattle markets considering the challenges facing producers.

Mark McHargue tells Brownfield he believes some action will come from their discussions. “I think we do have some market situations that are broken,” he says. “I think those things have been identified.  The million-dollar question is will that be the right fix and what things come out of it? But I think it’s a good start.”

Member leaders of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Farmers Union, R-CALF USA, and the United States Cattlemen’s Association met in Phoenix, Arizona May 10 at the request of the Livestock Marketing Association.

He says he also supports action taken by congressional leaders and others asking the Department of Justice for answers in their investigation into the nation’s largest meat packers. “Well, I do think we need a conclusion. We’ve asked Congress, USDA and DOJ many times to weigh in. I just think we need a little more information from them and I’m in agreement with that.”

Earlier this week, congressional leaders sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General to continue the DOJ investigation and release findings.  The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association also sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General calling for action.
