Nebraska Senator Fischer calls for cattle market investigations
Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer is calling for investigations into potential anti-competitive behavior in the beef packing industry.
Fischer has asked Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to expand his agency’s investigation of beef pricing margins—the investigation that was launched last fall following the Holcomb, Kansas, beef plant fire—to include recent market impacts as a result of COVID-19.
In addition, Fischer is asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold a public hearing to examine claims of price manipulation and collusion within the beef packing industry.
Fischer says producers are taking price losses that threaten the viability of their businesses.
We can hope that finally some truths will come out.
Let’s hope more comes out than the standard NCBA comments.
