Nebraska initiative focuses on livestock expansion

A-FAN executive director Kristen Hassebrook addresses the organization’s annual meeting in Lincoln.

Livestock industry expansion is the focus of a new program in Nebraska.

The Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (A-FAN) has launched the Producer Empowerment Initiative, which will provide producers with the knowledge and tools to work through the process of starting or expanding a livestock operation.

Kristen Hassebrook, executive director of A-FAN, says one part of the initiative involves “community conversations”.

“Getting them prepared and giving them the right resources to talk with their neighbors, solicit buy-in from community members, and really get that grassroots support going at the community level for their existing operation or expanding operation,” Hassebrook says.

The other piece of the project is called “Know Before You Build”.

“(It) is really focused on the things that they need to go through the zoning permit application, and to talk about manure management and how they’re going to manage those nutrients on their farm,” Hassebrook says.

A-FAN will hold a series of livestock development workshops for producers starting in January.
