Nebraska Governor Ricketts signs Beef Month proclamation

Nebraska Beef Council vice chair Dawn Caldwell addresses the media during a “May is Beef Month” news conference, joined by Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (r) and Nebraska Cattlemen’s president Galen Frenzen.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed May as Beef Month this morning during a news conference at the State Capitol in Lincoln.

Governor Ricketts was joined by Galen Frenzen of Fullerton, president of Nebraska Cattlemen, and Dawn Caldwell of Edgar, vice chair of the Nebraska Beef Council.

Caldwell cited a recent survey showing that 74 percent of Nebraskans enjoy beef at least once a week, to which Governor Ricketts quipped, “Just so you know, I’m doing more than that”.

During the Q & A session that followed, Caldwell and Frenzen were asked about the issue of “fake meat”, meat produced with either non-meat products or in a laboratory. Frenzen said the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is working to address the issue, pushing federal agencies to clarify who has the authority to determine if meat terms such as burger and steak can be used on products that do not come from an animal. Caldwell mentioned the challenges that the dairy industry is dealing with related to use of the term “milk” and said the beef industry wants to see the issue addressed before it gets to that point.

Ricketts also announced plans to lead a trade mission to Mexico this August. He said the delegation is expected to meet with Mexican national officials, agricultural officials, and industry leaders currently using Nebraska products.
