Nebraska farmer says his crops look good

Nebraska farmer Greg Whitmore says, from what he’s seen, his corn crop will be just as good as last year’s.

“One field that we did a yield check on confirms the USDA is probably right about being five bushels better here in Nebraska,” Whitmore says.

USDA’s latest estimate put Nebraska’s average corn yield at 183 bushels per acre, compared to 178 last year.

Whitmore says cooler-than-normal temperatures over the past month have delayed crop development slightly.

“I would say it’s normal to maybe just slightly later-than-normal,” he says. “We’re starting to see some of the early soybeans turning. So we’re rapidly approaching maturity, even though the cooler weather has kind of held things back a little bit.”

Whitmore, who farms nears Shelby in east-central Nebraska, will host a Soil Health Partnership field day on Wednesday, September 6th. The event, which focuses on cover crops, will begin at the Central Valley Coop in Shelby at 10 a.m.

We visited with Whitmore about that event and his experience with cover crops.
