Nebraska farmers, machinery dealers welcome sales tax change

harvest sceneEffective October 1st, Nebraska farmers and ranchers will no longer have to pay sales tax on repair and replacement parts for agricultural machinery and equipment.

Jay Rempe, Nebraska Farm Bureau’s vice president of government relations, says it will mean about nine to ten million dollars in tax savings for the state’s farmers.

“On the other side, from the standpoint of the dealers along the borders, none of our surrounding states have collected this tax and it made Nebraska dealers very uncompetitive,” Rempe says.  “So hopefully some dollars will stay home and be circulated through the rural communities and the dealers will see some increased business because of this.”

The change to Nebraska state law is the result of passage of Farm Bureau-supported legislation during the 2014 session of the Nebraska Unicameral.
