Nebraska farmers anticipate good crops this fall

Nebraska farmers, in general, are expecting some good crop yields this fall.

Michael Dibbern, who farms near Wood River in central Nebraska, says yields won’t match last year’s record yields, but they’ll come close.

“Our (corn) average will probably be about 245. I think we did about 255 last year, so probably 240 to 245,” Dibbern says. “Soybeans, we’re looking at 65 to 70.”

Dibbern says they’ve had twice as much rain this year as they normally do.

Richard Bartek of Ithaca in eastern Nebraska says he would welcome another shot of rain.

“Rain would probably help test weight and make the beans a little bigger, I’m sure,” Bartek says. He says he expects yields to be about average this year.

But it’s been a tough year for crops in parts of western Nebraska. Andy Groskopf is from Scottsbluff.

“We got a lot of hail where I farm,” Groskopf says. “The corn is damaged really good and the dry edible beans are tore up bad.”

Brownfield spoke with those farmers at Husker Harvest Days near Grand Island, Nebraska.
