Nebraska farmer calls 2021 the year that ‘never stopped’

Nebraska farmer Michael Bergen says the 2021 growing season was a whirlwind.

“We went from planting into spraying and row-crop cultivation and from there we went straight into irrigation and we irrigated all the way up until harvest time,” Bergen says. “It was something that we never got a break and we never caught a nice rain.”

Bergen, who farms in near the south-central town of Henderson, tells Brownfield a July windstorm damaged many of his buildings, grain bins and crops. “We’ve rebuilt. We’ve overcame that but for the length of my farming career, that’s something that’s going to etched in my memory.”

The first-generation farmer says he also had a setback during harvest when he contracted COVID-19. “And not being able to finish harvest, that’s the first time for me during harvest that I was physically unable to do my own harvest.”

Bergen says his corn and soybeans made above average yields in some places and met expectations in areas where crops suffered from wind damage.
