Nebraska crop conditions take slight hit this week from weather

Nebraska crop conditions took a slight hit last week from severe storms and the drought in parts of the state.

The USDA says corn is rated 77 percent good-to-excellent, down five percent from last week.

Farmer and ServiTech Agronomist Matt Oswald of Aurora says corn remains relatively healthy. “A lot of the corn around our area is starting to tassel so we’ll be seeing pollination in a little less than a week or so.”

Nearly 60 percent of soybeans have bloomed – a jump of 14 percent from last week but good-to excellent condition ratings dropped three percent to 77 percent.

Oswald tells Brownfield, “Soybeans are putting on pods or late bloom stage. On both those crops, we’re entering high-water use times so we’re trying to keep up with our irrigation scheduling.”

Topsoil moisture is 57 percent adequate with subsoil moisture 53 percent adequate.

Winter wheat harvest is 22 percent behind last year at 23 percent.

Eighty percent of sorghum is rated in good-to-excellent condition.

Oats are rated 53 percent good-to-excellent and dry beans are rated 82 percent good-to-excellent condition.

Pasture and range conditions are rated 59 percent fair and only 25 percent good.
