NCGA president concerned about Mexico GMO corn ban

The new president of the National Corn Growers Association is increasingly concerned about Mexico’s proposed ban on GMO corn.

Tom Haag, who farms near Eden Valley, Minnesota, says initially it sounded like only food-grade corn would be affected.

“Well, as they get deeper into this it gets tougher and tougher because (Mexico) might ban our GMO corn going into livestock feed.”

He says NCGA is communicating with the U.S. Trade Representative as the situation unfolds.

“If we have to have a lawsuit because with (the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement), according to what USTR says, they aren’t living up to what they negotiated (and) what they wanted in this trade agreement.”

If the Mexican government follows through on its proposed ban, Haag says it would hurt the bottom line of U.S. corn farmers and raise food prices in Mexico.
