NCBA blasts GIPSA regulations

A spokesman for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) says the new GIPSA regulations announced by USDA will “drastically limit the way producers can market cattle”.

“It means that if one producer thinks that it’s unfair that his neighbor is getting a premium based upon some sort of value-added product, this rule is written so broadly that they could utilize their trial attorney friends to file lawsuits against several people within the beef production chain,” says Colin Woodall, NCBA’s chief lobbyist in Washington, D.C..

Woodall calls the rules a “trial lawyers dream” that open up a significant amount of liability.

“The packers and processors have made it very clear that, with this kind of liability, the programs that we as a cattle industry have worked so hard to put together over the past several years—value-added programs—could very well go away.”

Woodall says NCBA will work with the new Administration and new Congress to prevent the GIPSA regulations from going into effect.

Woodall made those comments during a recent NCBA webinar.
