NBB pleased with EPA’s decision to deny some “gap” SRE petitions

The National Biodiesel Board is pleased with the EPA’s decision to deny 54 of the 68 pending gap small refinery exemption petitions.

The EPA denied the petitions reviewed by the Department of Energy. Fourteen remaining petitions are still under review.

Kurt Kovarik is NBB’s vice president of federal affairs.

“The administration needs to be applauded for this action,” he says. It’s a great win for the biodiesel industry and the soybean farmer.”

He says the decision will help provide the industry with certainty.

“This is an enormous step in the right direction to provide hopefully, finally, the final nail in the coffin of the SRE scheme that the refiners have implemented and EPA has acted on,” he says.

Kovarik says NBB is hopeful EPA will continue to apply this standard to the remaining gap exemptions and future petitions.
