NAWG offended by Trump comments about wheat exports to Japan

The National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) has taken offense to comments President Trump made Tuesday while talking about the trade deficit with Japan.

NAWG CEO Chandler Goule says the President suggested Japan doesn’t want U.S. wheat.

“They just do it to make us feel okay. Which is just frustrating, hurtful, and wrong.”

Japan is the number one market for U.S. wheat, and Goule tells Brownfield the Japanese buy it because it’s among the highest quality in the world.

“So to yank the rug out from underneath the hard-working U.S. farmers and wheat growers in this country, to say that we are not producing a quality product that the Japanese are buying. Basically, I took (Trump’s comments) that Japan is buying it out of pity. It’s just frustrating.”

Goule says NAWG is standing up to the Trump Administration and has requested a meeting with the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office to address the President’s comments.
