National Pork Board launching campaign showcasing environmentally-friendly practices

A member of the National Pork Board says the organization is launching a campaign to show how the industry continues to be good stewards of the environment.

Rob Christine tells Brownfield they want to share, “how we’ve made such great improvements and to answer consumer questions as to why we keep animals inside,” he says. “And how we utilize nutrients off the farm to be a sustainable fertilizer for our corn and soybeans and other crops.”

He says the industry is “doing everything they can” to tell its story. “We’re working with a myth buster – Eric Stonestreet. We’re going to be coming out with some videos this fall. We’ve already done the raw footage shoots of that last week at a farm in Kansas.”

Christine says over the last six decades pork producers have reduced land usage by 7 percent, decreased water usage by 25 percent, are using 7 percent less energy and reduced their carbon footprint by 7 percent.

He says the industry has achieved those numbers through new technology. “New barns, environmentally controlled facilities, genetics on corn, genetics on beans, genetics on pigs, reduction in carbon footprint – it’s just a fantastic story.”

Christine made his comments at the first Nebraska Pork Expo in York, NE.
