National Milk says pricing recommendations are balanced

Dairy economists with the National Milk Producers Federation are ensuring farmers will not see financial harm by changes proposed to the Federal Milk Marketing Order System.

“We are confident that our package of proposals will not cause losses to dairy farmers.”

Peter Vitaliano tells Brownfield proposals approved by their board of directors provide a fair approach for processors and farmers.

“It’s so critically important that we have a balanced package of provisions that will increase the Class prices as well as those that will decrease them,” he shares.

Analysis of the recommendations by Scott Brown at the University of Missouri found about a three-cent per hundredweight increase in prices over the next decade.

Economists expect the seven proposals to modernize pricing formulas, which they say have been undervaluing the components in milk and the true costs of manufacturers.

During a webinar for Young Cooperators this week, the organization said it’s finalizing requests for USDA to hold a formal pricing hearing which is expected by this summer, and changes could be fully implemented by 2024.
