National FFA President reflects on year of service amid pandemic

Different, tough, meaningful, and joyful are all words that Kolesen McCoy used to describe his year as National FFA president.

“I’m very glad I had this year and the way it was. Though difficult, I think we’re still walking away providing students something to be proud of when they look back,” he says.

When asked if he had a favorite memory from his year of service, the Ohio native recalls hosting a virtual workshop attended by only two members.

“They were so positive and I think it was a good moment for me to realize this is different, workshops look different this year, and the way we interact with students looks different,” he says. “That was such a meaningful encounter for me, and I was reminded that there’s still plenty of good to be found in this platform.”

Advice McCoy has for FFA members who are interested in serving as an officer is to take advantage of opportunities in the organization.

“All it takes is a willing heart to say ‘hey, I don’t know what I’m going to get out of this experience, but I think it can still be beneficial and valuable so I’m going to go for it,’” he says. “I think at the end of the day they’ll be happy with their decision to pursue more in our organization.”
