NAFTA renegotiation talks welcomed over immediate withdraw

Following yesterday’s threats, President Donald Trump has agreed not to immediately terminate US participation the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The White House said the three leaders agreed to proceed swiftly to enable the renegotiation of NAFTA to benefit Canada, Mexico, and the US.

Tom Sleight, president and CEO of the US Grains Council says the news was welcomed.  “Support for US agriculture – that voice was heard,” he says.  “And the importance of trade to agriculture was heard and we’re on a less severe stance with Mexico right now and Canada.”

When it comes to renegotiating NAFTA, he tells Brownfield, there aren’t a lot of changes needed on the grain side.  “In terms of phytosanitary requirements and a better new-age way to look at biotech in terms of regulations and trade,” he says.  “But generally there’s not a lot we need to be seeing changed.”

The National Pork Producers Council says NAFTA has been a tremendous success for the US pork industry and abandoning the agreement and going back to pre-NAFTA tariffs would be financially devastating to the US pork industry.
