NAFTA lines drawn in the sand

There are reports NAFTA negotiations are being stymied by what U.S. officials call a reluctance by Canada and Mexico to offer counter-proposals on key issues.

Bloomberg cites people close to discussions saying American negotiators are especially frustrated with Canada for publicly stating some U.S. NAFTA positions are unacceptable, without presenting alternatives to the negotiating table.

Some of the major sticking points involve regional content requirements and dispute settlement, according to those sources.

Most farm groups are urging the Trump Administration, which has repeatedly threated to pull out of NAFTA, to do no harm to agriculture in any renegotiation.

With the fifth round of talks concluding ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, progress continues to be described as slow.
