Mullins Cheese takes 8 displaced Grassland milk producers

Eight of the nearly 75 Wisconsin dairy producers displaced by cuts at Grassland Dairy have a new buyer for their milk.  Bill Mullins from Mullins Cheese in Mosinee and Marshfield tells Brownfield they plan to take the extra milk even though they already operate near capacity. “We always have farms that are switching around or selling cows, or some go out of business and things like that, so I guess we’re kind of like betting on the future a little bit more for taking on some great quality farms.  I mean these guys got good quality milk and so it’s hard to pass up, especially when it’s right in  your area.”

And for these eight dairies, he says the future is good.  “When we take on producers like this, this is not just for short term.  We’re here to service these guys here for a long time.”

Mullins says the eight farms are close to the processor, and there’s a milk hauler already in their neighborhood with room for the extra 100-thousand pounds of milk every day.

Mullins Cheese processes more than 7-million pounds of milk a day, with more than 4 million of that going through the new Mosinee addition.

Many affected producers and the state’s Farm Center have contacted Mullins about taking more milk.  He says it’s hard to say no.  “Your heart goes out for these folks” adding “You get on a phone conversation with some of these folks that have been (pause), the farm’s been in the family for five and six generations, how do you say I can’t help you?  That becomes very tough.”

Greenwood, Wisconsin-based Grassland Dairy says losing the ultra-filtered market in Canada forced them to let producers go at the end of this month.  Nasonville (WI) Dairy also released 13 producers last month.  State officials confirm nearly half of Nasonville’s displaced dairies have found a new buyer for milk.
