Mostly dry week good for Wisconsin field work

Wisconsin farmers took advantage of early week weather to harvest small grains, hay, and forage crops.  The USDA’s National Ag Statistic Service reporters say the sun was out about four-and-a-half days until much of the state experienced a soaking rain on Thursday as the State Fair opened.

Eighty percent of the corn is at or beyond silking stage with 17% in the dough stage and pollination in full swing.  Eighty-seven percent of the soybeans are blooming.  Ninety percent of the oats have turned color.  The winter wheat harvest is 74% complete.

Alfalfa third crop is just over half done, and some farmers are starting to cut a fourth crop.

Soil moisture levels remain high in most places, with 96% of Wisconsin reporting either adequate or surplus topsoil moisture and 99% at either adequate or surplus subsoil moisture.
