MOSES conference kicks off with Organics 2051 session

The Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service annual conference kicked off with a look at where organic farming might be in 30 years.

MOSES board member and Wisconsin organic farmer Sylvia Burgos Toftness says she was joined by more than 100 heavy hitters in a session Thursday called Organics 2051.

“We were all in the room saying ‘what does this need to look like? How do we overcome some of the institutional and legal obstacles in the way to growth? How do we get more farmers interested?”

She tells Brownfield MOSES has begun to set goals and metrics for its vision.

“How do we know if we’re succeeding in this? Are we making any headway?”

Burgos Toftness says more diversity among organic organizations, inclusion of conventional farmers, and creating opportunities for young farmers will be benchmarks moving forward.
