More turkey farms with avian influenza in South Dakota

Commercial turkey farms continue to get hit by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in South Dakota. State veterinarian Beth Thompson says the virus is being introduced to commercial flocks independently.

“We’re finding minimal farm-to-farm spread. Research out of Minnesota shows the possibility of dust when farms are being worked. There’s always the possibility of tracking it in.”

Thompson tells Brownfield with year-round HPAI risks, enhanced biosecurity is becoming the norm.

“Truck routes are being changed. Folks are thinking differently about feed deliveries, how many visitors they may actually allow on their farms in an ongoing basis. All of that is being looked at again.”

With snow and cooler weather in the forecast, Thompson is hopeful migratory birds will move out of the Midwest. In South Dakota, more than 2.4 million birds have been depopulated due to HPAI this year.
