More rain expected as flooding increases in Illinois

A climatologist says more rain is coming for portions of Illinois that are already impacted by flooding.

“The National Weather Service’s precipitation predictions are showing an additional one to two inches of rain across the state by next weekend. The heaviest precipitation is really targeting northwest portions of the state at this time.”

Brian Kerschner with the Illinois State Climatologist’s office tells Brownfield the average statewide rainfall in April was nearly 4.6 inches, almost an inch more than the long-term average.

He says 89 river gauges in the state are reporting crests in minor to major flood stages.

“Gauges along the Mississippi River in northern Illinois are slowly receding at this time, while gauges along the Illinois and Mississippi rivers in southern portions of the state are forecast to peak around mid-week.”

Kerschner says after next weekend Illinois might see a window of dryer weather.
