More money for farmer’s mental health, dairy innovation

More money might be on the way to help farmers deal with stress and additional dairy innovation projects.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin says the Appropriations Committee is assigning more money for the Farmers First program, which is part of the Farm Bill. She says, “This is the second year it will receive funding and we’ve been able to increase the funding available to the Farmers First Act in this agriculture appropriations bill to three million dollars worth of support.”

Baldwin says the committee is also looking at a big boost to the new Dairy Business Innovation initiatives. “Last year, it was at two million to sort of do the seed money. This year, for 2020 funding, it will be ten-fold that, (at) twenty million dollars.”

Baldwin says the alliance of Wisconsin’s farmers, processors, and the University of Wisconsin had a strong application for the innovation grants, and she believes that bodes well for additional dairy innovation funding in the future.
