Mixed impact from wet, warm February in Tennessee

Warm, wet weather during this winter has helped crop and livestock conditions in Tennessee, but there have been some downsides.

The USDA says 99% of the state has adequate to surplus soil moisture, nearly unchanged from the end of January, when almost all of the state was at least abnormally dry at the start of the season.

Still, that precipitation has led to flooding and kept some producers from fertilizing wheat and spraying hay, with parts of the winter wheat crop continuing to reflect damage from a late December freeze.

57% of Tennessee’s winter wheat crop is called good to excellent, a jump of 16% on the month, while 61% of cattle are in good to excellent condition, 3% higher.

62% of the state has adequate to surplus hay and roughage.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
