Missouri rebate-style gas tax bill advances

A Missouri Senate committee has advanced a bill that raises the state’s gas tax but has a rebate option for drivers. Missouri’s major ag groups say road and bridge repair is critical and at the top of their legislative priorities this year. The senate bill, sponsored by Dave Schatz, would require voter approval to enact a 2 and a half cent per gallon gas tax increase each year for six years.

A rebate option is also in a House bill sponsored by Representative Becky Ruth of Festus.. Her bill would increase the gas tax by two-cents a year for five years, “In South Carolina, when they did this – and they did 12-cents over six years – they gave back a little over three-million-dollars and they took in for their road fund a little over 500-million.”

She says Missouri’s roads and bridges are in grave need, “This is critically needed for our state to find a type of sustainable funding source. And I think this is just one tool in the tool box to help us continue to maintain and fund our roads and bridges.”

Her bill would not need voter approval. The Senate bill now goes before the full Senate.
