Missouri pork producers donate hams to food banks

More than 70-thousand pounds of ham is being donated to Missourians in need across the state.  The Missouri Pork Association joined with Smithfield Foods and Prairie Fresh Pork at the Food Bank of Central & Northeast Missouri on Tuesday for the announcement.

Marcus Belshe is a pig farmer and chairman of Missouri Pork Association, “Being a good neighbor means doing what’s right and being involved in the community. It means donating our time and resources. And today it means helping make the holidays a little brighter for those in need.”

The association donated $5-Thousand dollars on top of the ham donations from Smithfield and Prairie Fresh.

Scott Baker, head of Feeding Missouri, which oversees all six food banks in the state, says protein is ALWAYS needed…

“Missouri can produce protein and our farmers do that really well. And that’s an ongoing need so it’s just a matter of connecting those dots. That’s why we’re so excited and we’re excited to get this meat out to our neighbors in need across the entire state.”

The hams were delivered to the five other food banks in Missouri on Tuesday to reach people in need in every county in the state.

The donation was made in partnership with the Pork Board and National Pork Producers Council “Hams Across America” program that highlights pig farmers’ We Care ethical principles.
