Missouri Department of Ag awards Food Desert Matching Grant

The Missouri Department of Agriculture has awarded 12 food producers across the state with their Food Desert Agriculture Matching Grant.

In its first year, the grant matches up to $25,000 with the goal of increasing food production and availability in areas with food insecurity.

The manager of the Missouri Grown Program, Christi Miller, tells Brownfield she looks forward to seeing the results of the program.

“We are, of course, very anxious to see how they are able to address food insecurity across our state, and I think that they really will,” she said.

Miller said the grant provides a boost to a variety of types of agriculture in rural and urban areas.

“These are 12 applicants and 12 projects that are really ready to go, and I think are going to make a big difference in food insecurity where they are,” Miller said. And they’re spread all across our state.”

Miller said while the program’s future depends on next year’s budget, she thinks the grant provides an opportunity for producers to move their projects forward.

The awarded projects must be completed by May 1st.
