Missouri cotton planting behind, but there’s still time

There was more rain in Missouri this past week, causing flooding in some areas. Rain averaged more than 2 inches statewide. Topsoil moisture is 99 percent adequate to surplus.

Corn planting is 77 percent done, 16 percentage points behind a year ago, but 8 percentage points ahead of normal.   The crop is 82 percent fair to good.  Two percent is excellent.  Soybeans are 9 percent planted.  Cotton planting was 16 percent complete.  It was halted by rain the week before last, but University of Missouri cotton researcher Andrea Jones says growers shouldn’t be worried yet.

“Right now, with planter capacities, if we could get ten dry days, I think the Missouri Bootheel could be completely planted,” Jones told Brownfield Ag News.

The optimum cotton planting date in the Bootheel is May 6th, according to Jones, but she says there’s still time to get a good crop.

“Of course we never like any June-planted cotton,” she said.  “We like to have all of the cotton planted usually done and wrapped up by May 25th.”

Missouri winter wheat is 87 percent fair to good.  Just 6 percent is excellent.  Missouri pastures are 91 percent fair to good, and 8 percent excellent.
