Mississippi sued over meat labeling law

A vegan food company is suing the state of Mississippi over a new state law that bans companies from using meat related terms to describe plant-based food products.

Upton’s Naturals Co., based in Illinois, and the Plant Based Foods Association filed a federal lawsuit last week saying the law goes against their freedom of speech.

Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture, Andy Gipson, was named in the lawsuit. He says food product labels should not be misleading and wants Mississippi consumers to have clear information on the meat and non-meat products they purchase.

The Mississippi law says a food product that is plant or insect based is not allowed to be labeled as a meat product.
