Mississippi River navigation season is open

Another mode of transportation is back in service for U.S. commodities and products.

The Army Corps of Engineers reports the Motor Vessel W. Red Harris with a tow of barges broke a channel through the ice on Lake Pepin Monday and headed upstream through Lock and Dam #3 at Red Wing, Minnesota, officially starting the 2022 river navigation season.  The Harris has already departed St. Paul with a tow of barges heading downstream and was approaching Hastings, Minnesota Tuesday evening.

Army Corps of Engineers officials reported the ice thickness on Lake Pepin ranged from 10 to 21 inches on March 16th when they last measured it.
