Minnesota sticking with June 20th dicamba cutoff

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will continue its June 20th cutoff date for dicamba applications in 2020.

The state-specific restriction is in addition to the EPA’s federal regulations on the herbicide.

Minnesota Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen tells Brownfield since the date restriction was implemented, the number of dicamba drift complaints has fallen from more than 250 in 2017 to 22 this year.

“A big decision the Department made to stick with the June 20th date.”

He calls dicamba an important tool for battling herbicide-resistant weeds, and says MDA wants to preserve it by limiting the impacts on neighboring homes, farms, and gardens.

In Minnesota, the XtendiMax, Engenia, FeXapan, and Tavium formulations of dicamba are “Restricted Use Pesticides” for retail sale to and for use only by Certified Applicators.
