Minnesota Pork CEO welcomes changes to Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program

The CEO of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association is pleased with changes to the Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program.

David Preisler tells Brownfield eligible producers will have more time to apply.

“The new deadline is April 29th, and even if a person has applied already, there is the option to change your application because now we have a little more clear direction from USDA on what will be eligible.”

He says the department clarified definitions for “spot market sales” and “sales to a packer” to better reflect nontraditional transactions including sales to dealers, cull markets, meat lockers and others.

“More opportunity for folks that may have sold pigs to like sales barns, brokers, or just to smaller packing plants. Just a lot more flexibility from a standpoint of how some of those sales got made back in 2020.”

Preisler says that will help immensely because those were the producers “who got hurt the worst.”
