Minnesota Pork CEO says Japan trade deal “levels playing field”

The CEO of the Minnesota Pork Producers says the preliminary trade agreement with Japan accomplishes much of what the Trans-Pacific Partnership would have for U.S. pork.

David Preisler tells Brownfield without the deal, the U.S. would be at a disadvantage to members of what is now the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.

“And that’s really what we were after with TPP is to get to that level playing field with others, and that’s what we’ll achieve with this agreement assuming it actually gets through in Japan.”

Preisler is optimistic Japanese lawmakers will approve the agreement before adjourning December 9th.

But he says there remain casualties of the U.S. withdrawing from TPP.

“It’s an equal piece as we look at Japan. What is still outstanding though would be the other countries that were in TPP, for example Vietnam. And there’s some other southeastern Asia countries that would’ve been really important to have agreements with. But Vietnam was probably the most important one.”

Preisler says he’s hopeful the U.S. will make a bilateral trade agreement with Vietnam a priority moving forward.
