Minnesota Pork CEO calls hog market rally “a very pleasant surprise”

The hog market has rallied to prices not seen in at least six years.

Minnesota Pork CEO David Preisler calls it a very pleasant surprise and says it’s a result of a couple factors.

“We do have lower numbers compared to where we were at the last few years. And the other thing is demand is just incredible, both domestically and from an international basis.”

He tells Brownfield the price recovery will help cover higher feed costs.

“But quite honestly margins look really good right now. We haven’t seen margins like this for quite some time. We certainly hope that it lasts (and) a lot of it is influenced by exports.”

Preisler says China remains a big wildcard as that country continues to deal with outbreaks of African swine fever.
