Minnesota Pork Ambassadors selected at Farmfest

The Minnesota Pork Board selected Amelia Welter of Olmstead County as the 2017-2018 Minnesota Pork Ambassador.

Welter, one of 15 young people competing this year, says she’s honored to represent Minnesota pork producers.

“I grew up on a pig farm, so pork is near and dear to my heart.  I’ve had the experience of being around pigs my entire life.  Getting engaged with consumers, talking with producers, making sure that our stories are all being heard is part of my responsibility.”

Welter tells Brownfield consumers are very curious about pork production.

“They just want to know how their food is being raised.  What does a pig farm look like?  They have no idea in their heads, so they’ve got this cartoon image of what’s going on.  And it’s great that they’re coming to us so we can tell them (about) this is how we get the piglets and we’re raising them up until you can have them as your pork.”

Sierra Williamson of Martin County was named first runner-up, and Kenny Strobel of Waseca County was chosen second runner-up.

Welter says the Pork Ambassadors will be working the Oink Outing booth during the Minnesota State Fair beginning August 24th.
