Minnesota farmer wants carbon markets to become a substantial revenue stream

A farmer in southern Minnesota would like to see carbon markets become a substantial source of income.

Harold Wolle of Madelia tells Brownfield incentives that promote soil health should more than cover the cost of doing the practice.

“And where we’re at right now, it just helps with the cost.”

Besides opportunities in the private sector, the National Corn Grower board member says lawmakers like Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow are talking about carbon markets that the federal government would oversee.

“So we need to be involved as a corn grower organization as we move forward in these discussions, always advocating for our farmers so that this can be source of revenue.”

Wolle says his farm sequesters carbon by enrolling acres in the Conservation Reserve Program, no-tilling sandier soils, and using conservation tillage on the rest.
