Minnesota farmer says corn looks better than soybeans

A farmer in south-central Minnesota says his corn crop looks better than his soybeans.

Tim Waibel of Courtland tells Brownfield conditions were cool and wet this spring.

“Planting was behind schedule, corn emerged very well. Soybeans, ground conditions were better than what we put a lot of the corn in, but yet the soybeans don’t look quite as good as the corn does.”

Waibel is unsure why that’s the case.

“I wish I knew. Some of the very early planted beans look pretty good, but you would think that the ground would’ve been in better conditions the more we got into the later planting, and certainly those beans just didn’t take off like they should’ve.”

Waibel says the weather seemed to go straight from winter-like to summer and that might be why his soybeans don’t look as good.
