Minnesota farmer pleasantly surprised with yields this year
An organic row crop farmer in west-central Minnesota sums up 2021 as “surprising.”
Carolyn Olson of Cottonwood says her expectations were low going into harvest because of the drought.
“Our yields were decent all across the board, from our small grains, wheat and oats, to our soybeans (and) corn. We were actually pleased with our yields.”
She tells Brownfield her area suffered from extreme drought most of the summer.
“We were in the D3 category, in the red. And then we started getting a few rains here and there late summer (and) this fall to where we’re at the point now where we’re in the not dry, not wet category. We’re just kind of average.”
Olson says her late soybean and longer-season corn varieties really benefited from the August and September rains.
