Minnesota farmer hopeful fieldwork can start soon

A Minnesota farmer is hopeful fieldwork in his area will be underway a month from now.

Brian Thalmann grows corn and soybeans west of the Twin Cities.

“After seeing the melting the last few days, I think that is achievable in our part of the state. The further west you go and further south you go, the more snow they have and the bigger the snow banks are. But the last three to four days we’re seeing snow recede across fields.”

He tells Brownfield about half the snow covering fields near him has disappeared.

“And that area is getting larger each day. So with temps approaching the mid to upper 50’s by the weekend, I think the fields will be fairly well cleared off. We’ll just have the road ditches and snow piles left to melt, which takes more time. But the main soil surfaces will start to dry.”

Thalmann says drainage systems are starting to open up, which will also help dry out fields.
