Minnesota Farm Bureau president calls for DMC updates

The president of Minnesota Farm Bureau wants updates to the Dairy Margin Coverage Program included in the next farm bill.

Dan Glessing, a dairy farmer from Waverly, says DMC has been a good risk management tool but it no longer reflects the current ag economy.

“Certainly inflation has had something to do with that. So within the farm bill we’d love an updated production history. We’re working off of 10-year old numbers, and that’s what we’re insuring is a 10-year old production.”

Speaking to Brownfield at Farmfest Thursday, he said Farm Bureau has been advocating for updated production history, raising the first tier of coverage, and adding another tier of coverage.

“If your cows are making the same milk as they did 10 years ago, it’s hard to stay in business doing that kind of a model.”

Glessing says the numbers need to be “freshened up” to reflect the cost of doing business.
