Minnesota Department of Ag unveils unique nutrient management program

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is encouraging northwest and west-central Minnesota farmers to participate in a unique nutrient management program.

Producers and crop advisers in that part of the state are targeted for the Nutrient Management Initiative, which the MDA says will help improve water quality while managing production costs.

The region has lower participation, according to a press release, and MDA would like to increase the number of nitrogen trials in that area.

Participants will evaluate different on-farm practices through the use of replicated side-by-side field trials.

The Department says results should help farmers fine-tune nutrient management to increase efficiency and profitability.

The program is funded through the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.

Farmers receive a total of $800 dollars, while crop advisors receive $400 dollars per site enrolled.

Participant identification is kept confidential, and those interested are asked to contact the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
