Minnesota Corn working to become most sustainable

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) is taking steps to make corn farmers in the state the most sustainable and environmentally responsible in the country.

MCGA president Harold Wolle says the grassroots strategic plan has five parts.

“Which include reputation management, issues management, engagement with consumers and continuing corn utilization and research.”

He tells Brownfield Minnesota Corn is probably strongest in utilization and research, and the area needing the most attention is reputation and issues management.

“I think farmers have been on the defensive recently.  There’s been some negativity out there from environmental groups and even from some of our politicians, and we want to change that.  We want to get ahead of the ballgame (and) have an offensive strategy.”

The plan calls on Minnesota corn farmers to engage in sustainability programs and implement on-farm best management practices that fit their specific farm.

Wolle says one challenge will be measuring the results of these efforts.

“Part of this is going to be done through surveys.  We’ve done some surveys both of consumers and of our farmer-members, and we’ll continue to do that on a periodic basis and see if we can improve our numbers.”

Minnesota Corn says building new partnerships and strengthening existing collaborations are also a key part of the new initiative.
